There will be a Development Collection taken up after Communion today.

Friday is the First Friday in the Month. Confessions & Duty at The Graan. Tues – Fri inclusive 2pm5pm. Sat 5pm – 6pm.

Monday is the feast of St Gabriel, patron saint of The Graan. St Gabriel was born at Assisi in 1838. He always had great devotion to Mary and that led him to join the Passionists, where he was given the name Gabriel. He lived a mere five years in the Passionists - for four of those he was constantly ill. He died in 1862, while still a student. He is the patron of youth. There will be a blessing with the relic of St Gabriel after Mass on Monday at 8pm.

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. It’s a day of fast and abstinence. Abstinence means that we do not eat any meat on Wednesday. Fasting means we take only one main meal on that day. Everyone is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and those under 60 are bound to fast. It is a serious obligation for everyone.

Masses - Ash Wednesday: We will have an additional Mass on Ash Wednesday at 12.30pm. Ashes will be distributed at the Mass. We will have a Mass at 8pm as usual on Ash Wednesday night. Again ashes will be distributed at Mass.

Why Ashes: Ashes are a reminder of our own mortality, “Dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return.” Lent is a time of challenge to reflect on where our life is heading. When we come to church and receive Ashes it’s a sign we intend to do something special for Lent. Something special can include doing some charitable work for a person in need or giving up what is good and which we really enjoy. Or we could attend daily Mass, take time for prayer, watch less television, give to the poor and do more at home to make our family more welcoming. The prayer over the ashes includes a petition that those who are blessed will have the strength to persevere with whatever penance they take on.

Novena of Hope: 18th /19th March – 27th March. If you can help us by distributing Novena posters and leaflets you may pick them up at reception. Our next Novena meeting will be on 13th March to make final preparations.

Novena Petition & Leaflets: Our Novena leaflets and petitions are available at the church porches today.

Days for the Sick: We’d like you to sign the register at the front door if you can help in any way. Almost anybody could help out by preparing plates, looking after the sick and helping to clean up afterwards. You don’t have to be an expert to help. Even if you have volunteered in other years please do sign the register as soon as possible.

Children: In preparation for the Novena of Hope we invite children through schools, and individually to submit posters with the theme of Hope and Good News. You always do such a superb job.
