Thursday is the Feast of Paul Of The Cross: Paul of the Cross founded the Passionist Congregation. He was born in 1694 and died in 1775. He brought companions together to live and preach the Passion of Christ. Why the Passion? Because it showed God's love and mercy for us. It was his favourite subject. When he was old and sick he used to say to other Passionists, “Let mercy always be upper-most. If I was 30 years younger, I would go through the world and preach nothing but the mercy of God.” For more than 40 years of his life he was incapacitated by sickness. But worse still was his inner suffering. He often said he felt as dry as an old stick. When it came to prayer, like his Master on Calvary, he experienced a terrifying sense of abandonment by God. It was he said, “Like being in hell.” The Passion of Christ goes on in the world today, especially in the neglected, the poor and suffering. St Paul of the Cross brought his companions together to help suffering people. That's why we Passionists are still at The Graan.
