Ordained in Rome in 1654, he became a Professor of Theology from 1654 through 1669 and appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1669. He died in 1681 on July 1st. He was the first Irish martyr to be beatified. Tuesday: St Thomas the Apostle. He preached the Gospel in India where he was martyred. The faith that led him to ask Christ about the wounds he carried, also inspired him to go to the furthest places on earth to preach Christ. Wednesday: St Elizabeth of Portugal. Thursday: St Anthony Zaccaria, 1502-39, was a medical doctor before becoming a priest in Milan. He founded the Barnabites.

Friday 6th: St Maria Goretti. Her shrine is in our church. Maria Goretti was born near Ancona in Italy in 1890. Her parents were poor farm workers and her father died while she was still a child. When Maria was 12, an 18 year old neighbour, Alessandro, began to make advances towards her which she rebuffed. On the 5th July 1902 he arranged that they should be alone in their house and he assaulted her, threatening death if she did not give in. She chose death and in his rage Alessandro stabbed her several times. She died the following day having forgiven him. Alessandro was sentenced to 30 years in prison but by 1910 he was a changed man and spent the rest of his life working in a monastery garden. Both he and Maria’s family, including her mother, lived to see her canonised in 1950 by Pope Pius XII for her defence of Christian virtue. SatSt Maelruain, bishop & abbot, founded the monastery in Tallaght.
