Weekly Bulletin 12th January 2020

Sunday Collection last SundayCame to £1600. Thank you as always for your generous contributions.

There will be a Development Collection taken up after Communion today.

Today is The Baptism of the Lord: The Gospel writers introduce the public life of Jesus with his baptism by John in the Jordan. After thirty years of hidden growth, among the people queuing up to be baptised Jesus has an indescribable experience. He joins with sinners to set us free from sin and death. St. Paul later says in Romans 6:3 “Do you, a Christian, not realise that baptised as you are in Christ Jesus you are also baptised into his death, so you may live a new life?”

Feasts of the Week: Friday: St. Anthony who died in 356 lived a life of solitude but also attracted many others to form communities of hermits. He is called “Father of Monasticism” Saturday: The week of prayer for Christian Unity begins today Hospitality is a much needed virtue in our search for Christian unity. It calls us to a greater generosity to those in need. The people who showed unusual kindness to Paul and his companions, when they were shipwrecked in Malta,  did not yet know Christ, and yet it is through their unusual kindness that a divided people were drawn closer together. Our own Christian unity will be discovered not only through showing hospitality to one another, but also through loving encounters with those who do not share our language, culture or faith.

Christmas Crib: Thank you for all your kind contributions for the poor. It will be distributed this week to St Vincent de Paul to help their work with those in need.

Novena of Hope 2020: Takes place from 29th Feb – 9th March 2020. There will be a meeting on Monday 20th January in preparation for the Novena. Please keep this date in your diary.

THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY takes place from Saturday 18 January until Saturday 25 January 2020. The resources for this year were compiled by the Churches in Malta. The theme for this coming Week of Prayer is ‘Unusual Kindness’ and is taken from Acts of the Apostles (Acts 28:2). It recalls the coming of the Gospel to Malta and St Paul’s recognition of the unusual kindness received from the locals following his shipwreck there.
