There will be a Development Collection taken up next Sunday 8th December.
Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is a very short season which prepares us for Christmas. A season, too, when we approach one of the turning points of nature’s year. Listen to the warning in Paul’s second reading – “You know the time has come: you must wake now: our salvation is even nearer that it was when we were converted. The night is almost over, it will be daylight soon”
The Advent Wreath is circular to express the circle of life, beginning with God as creator and ending with God as our final destiny. The circle also represents Christ who came in the past, comes every day through grace, and will come again in final glory. Evergreen leaves show the unfailing love of God and our constant hope. The four outer candles are for the weeks of preparation before lighting the white candle at the centre for the birth of the Saviour.
