Weekly Bulletin 7th November 2021

Today is the Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: In today’s Gospel (Mark 12:38-44) Jesus is teaching in the Temple. The Law of Moses regulated all aspect of life for the Jewish people at that time. The scribes were the legal experts. Their legal expertise gave them great power, prestige and influence over others. Jesus attacks the scribes today for making their expertise, which should be directed primarily to the honour and glory of God, as a means of drawing attention and honour to themselves. They put on a good show! They dressed with style! They expected to be looked up to and from the shoppers in the market-place they demanded to be first in the queue! We live in the age of celebrity today. To idolise celebrities from afar is all right to a degree, as long as you don’t overlook your own celebrity. Please acknowledge the treasure you are – know that you are beloved of God, armed with a mission in life – that is reality, not shadow; that is substance, not image; that is gospel, not hype. Celebrity life is fleeting – “Now if that is how God clothes the grass in the field which is there today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, will he not much more look after you, you men of little faith!”(Luke 12:18)  Remember deep down the only true celebrity in God’s eyes is you! And your biggest fan is Jesus! The Gospel today continues with the contrasting picture of the poor widow putting all she had to live on into the temple treasury. The rich people gave their money to the temple out of their superfluity. The poor widow gave out of her want. She gives without fanfare or fuss! This is a big contrast to the scribes at the beginning of the Gospel. Their practice of religion is all for show – they are not giving honour to God but doing it to attract attention to themselves! The poor widow’s gift is so small yet in the eyes of God who sees the heart she has put in more than all the rest. Why? Because her offering represents total trust and abandonment to God, the protector of widows and orphans. The psalm today prays “The Lord upholds the widow and orphan but thwarts the path of the wicked” (Psalm 145)

Feasts of the Week: Tuesday: The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica: This is the cathedral church of the Bishop of Rome and is known as “Mother and Head of All Churches of the City and the World.” Wednesday: St. Leo the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church. (400-461) He was pope from 440 until his death in 461. His papacy was one of the most important in the history of the church. Thursday: St. Martin of Tours (335-397). Became bishop of Tours in 371 and was a founder of many monasteries. Friday: St. Josaphat (1580-1623) Worked for the unity of Ukrainian Catholics, his murder by those who opposed it brought about many conversions. Sat: Blessed Eugene Bossilkov C.P. Passionist, Bishop & Martyr (1900-1952) Born in Bulgaria. Martyred during the Stalinist persecution against religion. When counselled to stay in Italy he said: “A pastor cannot stay away from his flock. I have to suffer with my priests and the faithful.”

Thanks to our Ushers and Ministers of the Eucharist in helping towards the smooth running of our religious services. The collection last week came to £2040. Thanks for your generosity and the support of our mission especially during these financially straitened times.

November Dead Lists are available in our Church. Mass will celebrated here every day during the month of November for the names of your dead friends and relatives that you have inscribed in the list. “It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins”. (2 Maccabees 12:46)

Graan Draw: Tickets are available at all the doors of our Church. The draw will take place on the 17 December 2021. This is the only fund-raising activity that we have and we would appreciate your support as always. The prizes are: 1^st Prize – £5000, 2nd prize – £1000 & a further 5 prizes of £100. We also regret our annual Dinner Dance will be cancelled for a second year. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets at Lilley’s Shore Road and Dublin Road, Mc Keagney’s Tempo and Martin Rooney’s, Enniskillen.                   

The Shop has restocked for Christmas. There are a great selection of cribs on display as well as candles & suitable gifts for Christmas as well as Christmas Mass Bouquets.  Cost £2 / €2.50.
